The falling estrogen levels before menstruation is what usually triggers a migraine among women that causes severe head pain often accompanied by sensitivity to light, smells or sound. The common manifestations of a migraine attack include eye pain, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, and severe headache that is usually described as “pounding pain” on one side of the head. Hormonal changes, stress, certain foods, oversleeping, and strong stimuli such as loud noises are the common triggering factors of a migraine attack. Some types of birth control pills can trigger migraines, and various foods such as aged cheese, smoked meats, chocolate, dairy products, alcoholic beverages as well as artificial sweeteners and monosodium glutamate. If you are unsure what triggers your migraine, you need to keep a diary in order to identify individual factors that lead to your migraine attack.

The pharmacologic treatment for migraines include over-the-counter (OTC) like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium, or prescription drugs like triptans. In order to reduce the frequency of a migraine attack, regular exercise and eating healthy food greatly help. As much as possible, avoid eating foods that are known to trigger your migraine. For some people, meditation and relaxation strategies help them in preventing migraine attacks and reducing the severity of headaches such as yoga, meditation, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation. Most people with migraines combine pharmacologic treatments and lifestyle changes in managing their condition. For some patients who are experiencing severe headaches and migraine attacks, prescription medications are highly recommended. What is the definition of migraine aura? Migraine aura refers to specific warning symptoms before the onset of a migraine attack that may range from a blind spot in one eye, flashing lights or numbness involving one side of the body. A migraine aura usually last for several minutes and it is usually resolved once the head pain starts, though there are instances when a migraine aura may also last until a migraine is resolved. For people who have never experienced migraine aura, it can be frightening because it can mimic the signs and symptoms of a stroke.

Many women find their migraine headaches resolved during pregnancy because of consistently high levels of estrogen during pregnancy. In order to prevent the risk of birth defects, it is important to discontinue any medication that was used prior to pregnancy.
